Hublot Phones a Friend.

01·1 min read

The Summary

Hublot's "golden return" is here, and our guess was right.

The man who built modern Audemars Piguet is advising Hublot, and that is all he is doing, for now.

Nine F.P. Journes sell in New York tonight, and we have put a number on every one that matters.

Breitling is opening a private members' club, and the way in is a watch.

Biver made its first steel watch and cut its entry price.

Rolex's own second-hand programme just had its best quarter yet.

A Patek Philippe estimated at over $3 million leads what Phillips calls the most valuable watch auction ever assembled in America.

The Morgan Stanley report is out, and we have the second update on our market call.

This week's Pattern: the watch is turning into a membership card.

The Wire

Hublot went back to 1980, and this time it's mechanical. Last week we told you Hublot was teasing "a golden return to the 1980 origin" and guessed it meant a gold revival of the very first Hublot. On Thursday, in Milan, that is exactly what arrived.

In 1980, Hublot's founder, Carlo Crocco, showed a gold watch on a black rubber strap at the Basel fair. The industry was horrified. Rubber was for diving gear, not gold. It became the signature of the whole brand.
